The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday afternoon they have recovered an AR-15 and a vehicle believed to be used in connection to the shooting that took place on I-75 Saturday evening.
The shooting occurred near Exit 49 on the interstate, shutting down the road in both directions from exits 41 to 59.
According to a report, a vehicle, described as a silver Toyota CRV was located off a forestry service road near Exit 49, but not close enough to fire from where the vehicle was found. That vehicle was registered to 32-year-old Joseph Couch.
Inside the Toyota, officers found a gun case. The AR-15 was found in a location that a Laurel County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said the shooter could have shot down to the interstate. They are not sure why Couch left the gun behind.
With the discovery of the vehicle, weapon and additional information not disclosed, police officially upgraded Couch from a person of interest to a suspect.
In an update later Sunday afternoon, a Laurel County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said they believe Couch is still in the wooded area and are facing challenges due to how remote the area is.
The spokesperson also confirmed one victim was shot in the face, one in the arm and one in the chest.
Laurel County Sheriff John Root said that when deputies arrived to the scene, they found nine vehicles that had been shot into both north and south bound and five people had been seriously injured. All victims are in stable condition.
Joseph Couch should be considered armed and dangerous. So, if you see him, stay away and call 911.
