The father of a 3-year-old girl who accidentally shot and killed herself pleaded not guilty in court Monday.
E’Monta Goss was charged with second-degree manslaughter and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon in connection with the November 21 death of his daughter, Aubree Goss.
Louisville Metro Police said Aubree found a loaded gun that had allegedly been placed under a couch by her father, accidentally shot herself and died at the hospital from a single gunshot wound.
Less than four hours after the shooting, E’Monta Goss was arrested and charged. According to his arrest citation, he told police he loaded the gun and put it under the couch. He pleaded not guilty in court the next morning to those two charges and his bond was set at $250,000.
During a December 3 hearing, a Louisville Metro Police detective testified that Goss told police he fell asleep after putting the gun under the couch, and woke up to the sound of a pop and a “burning smell.” The same detective testified that Goss allegedly acknowledged responsibility when he was being questioned.
Judge Karen Faulkner said she considered lower charges for Goss, but stuck with second-degree manslaughter and the firearm charges to present to a grand jury on January 6.
Faulkner did, however, grant Goss’ release on house arrest in lieu of a $50,000 bond while the case proceeds.
According to court documents, a grand jury indicted Goss on those charges January 21. He pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment Monday.
Goss remains on house arrest in lieu of a $50,000 bond. His next court appearance was scheduled for March 17.
