Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said five more Kentuckians have died as a result of the severe weather the Commonwealth experienced last week.
That means 20 Kentuckians have died from the weather.
He said the most recent deaths were in Warren, Pike, Caldwell, Ohio and Morgan Counties.
This brings the total deaths in Pike County to four.
Crews have worked tirelessly to reopen roads closed statewide due to high water, mudslides and landslides.
More than 1,300 rescues have been completed in the last few days, many of which were on boats.
In an update Thursday morning, Beshear said the state is moving from an emergency search-and-recovery phase to a stabilization phase of recovery.
Earlier last week, President Donald Trump approved Kentucky’s request for an emergency disaster declaration. It allowed federal funding to go to areas impacted by the floods.
Beshear said he is still waiting for President Trump and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem to approve his request for individual assistance through FEMA and an Expedited Major Disaster Declaration, which has support from Kentucky’s entire congressional delegation.
It’s unclear when individual aid will be approved, however Beshear said that funding is a necessary step to help with rebuilding and relieve the financial burden on those who qualify for assistance. The maximum grant award is $43,600.
