Court records reveal a years-long, tumultuous relationship between murder suspect, 43 year-old Brandon McQuillen, and his father, who he is accused of killing on Wednesday.
His father, 65-year-old John McQuillen, was found shot outside in the 1200 block of Winter Springs Court around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, dying soon after at the hospital.
John McQuillen was a retired Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reserve deputy.
Initially, Brandon was arrested for violation of a protective order and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, but late Thursday night, Louisville Metro Police added a murder charge.
Investigators reviewed video surveillance and said Brandon can be seen leaving the scene of the shooting minutes after it occurred. They allege he drove off and parked not too far from the scene. The arrest citation details that officers later found him inside that vehicle several hours later, along with an AR-15, supplies for explosive manufacturing and several handwritten letters expressing a desire to kill his dad.
Court records indicate that was not the first time such claims have been made against Brandon.
His dad claimed the same threat in a hearing in 2024 for the renewal of prior protective order. He claimed Brandon texted him threatening to make his life miserable by making allegations about him that John said were not true. He also said that Brandon had broken in and stolen his guns. He reiterated the claims that Brandon had assaulted him prior, as well.
However, around the same time, Brandon filed for a protective order of his own against his dad. He alleged his dad attacked him, punching him in the face three times and threatened to shoot him if he did not leave. He then alleges his father threw a piece of machinery at him, adding his belief that John could not control his impulses.
A Jefferson County judge granted both men their respective protective orders, though it was not the first John had filed one against his son.
In 2018, John first filed a protective order against Brandon, alleging his son had attacked him, and when he attempted to call police, Brandon threatened to kill him. The protective order was to be in place through December 2021.
However, in 2019, court records show Brandon went to his father’s house, violating the order. Police found him in possession of a gun his father had reported stolen.
Brandon’s bond was set at $1 million. He requested a public defender and is expected to appear in court again next week.
