
Members of the Brandenburg City Council met during a special called meeting Monday (5/19) afternoon and heard the background of a recently proposed fence ordinance that allow privacy fences up to six feet tall from the front of a structure to the back of a lot.
City Surveyor Tim Smith explained his comments to the city planning and zoning commission which approved the idea of the updated regulation. Smith said in many communities the taller fences allowed better privacy on smaller lot sizes in subdivisions. The council discussed the issue further and voted down the new fence ordinance with a 4 to 2 vote.
In other business, Mayor David Pace read his yearly budget letter to the council which outlined items furthering the city’s progress with the current income revenue. Some of the key goals of the proposed 2025-26 budget includes a possible new police vehicle, purchase of additional radio read water meters and update the billing software, and a 3% salary increase for city employees. The budget also includes a 2 percent rate increase of water and sewer rates. Flat city rates will increase to $19.07 for the 1st 2,000 gallons for in city limit customers and $26.48 for the 1st 2,000 gallons customers outside of the city limits. The proposed sewer rates will increase to $26.50.
The first reading of ordinances to amend the 2024-25 budget and first readings of the proposed 2025-26 budget and water and sewer rates were held. A public comment period will be held during the regular meeting to be held on June 9 which is also expected discuss the proposed 1% occupation tax ordinance.
