The Kentucky State Police Post 4 is joining forces with law enforcement agencies from five neighboring states to remind drivers of a simple but critical message: Move over and slow down for emergency vehicles.
From July 20–26, troopers will participate in the 6-State Trooper Project, a coordinated effort among state police agencies in Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The focus of this high-visibility enforcement campaign is to promote compliance with Move Over laws and reduce roadside crashes involving law enforcement officers, emergency responders and service workers.
In 2003, Kentucky passed its Move Over law, requiring motorists to move to the adjacent lane when approaching an emergency vehicle or public safety vehicle with flashing lights (KRS 189.930). If changing lanes is impossible or unsafe, motorists must slow down and use caution. Failure to do so can result in fines, jail time or both (KRS 189.993 (8)).
Post 4 Commander, Captain Jeremy Smith says the goal is not only to enforce the law, but to protect lives.
Kentucky State Police reminds drivers to follow these safety tips:
Stay Alert: Avoid distractions like texting and driving to watch for flashing lights ahead.
Slow Down: Reduce your speed when approaching a vehicle stopped on the shoulder.
Move Over: If it’s safe, change lanes when you see a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights.
Obey the Law: Failing to move over can result in fines and endanger lives.
Kentucky State Police urges all drivers and passengers to help keep everyone on Kentucky roadways safe by obeying Move Over laws. To report dangerous driving behavior, contact your local Kentucky State Police post. For a full list of Kentucky State Police Post locations, visit the Kentucky State Police website.
