A Martha Layne Collins High School teacher was arrested Monday on charges of possessing and distributing child sex abuse material.
James Powell, 41, was arrested after a lengthy investigation.
He is facing 40 counts related to possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material, according to court documents.
Powell was arrested following an undercover investigation by the Internet Crimes Against Children task force. The probe began after a complaint from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, leading police to serve search warrants at both Powell’s home and the high school, where Powell is listed as being a math teacher.
Shelby County Public Schools officials notified families that they have no reason to believe the allegations are connected to any students.
