A wanted suspect is in custody after deputies say he fired a shotgun at law enforcement, crashed through a garage door, and led a high-speed chase following a standoff Tuesday night in Philpot.
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office says deputies, Kentucky State Police, Daviess County Fire Department, and the Thruston-Philpot Fire Department all responded to an area of Old Highway 54 around 6:50 p.m. after 37-year-old Kyle Smith refused to surrender to deputies who were attempting to serve arrest warrants on him.
According to the sheriff’s office, Smith was wanted for first-degree burglary out of Daviess County and other felonies out of Spencer County, Indiana.
Deputies confirmed Smith was inside the pole barn-style residence armed with at least one long gun. Authorities say they requested the Kentucky State Police SWAT Team to the scene while negotiators communicated with him.
After roughly three hours, deputies say Smith fired a 12-gauge shotgun at them from inside the building, drove a Nissan Maxima through the closed garage door, and tried to flee. Officials say he hit a parked truck he owns and struck a parked Daviess County Sheriff’s Office vehicle before driving away on Old Highway 54.
Deputies and troopers pursued Smith along Old Highway 54 and Highway 142 at speeds near 100 mph until he lost control and crashed.
Smith was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for evaluation. When released, he was booked into the Daviess County Detention Center on charges of 12 counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal mischief, and first-degree fleeing or evading law enforcement. He is being held on a $100,000 cash bond and scheduled to be in court on October 16
No other injuries were reported.
Daviess County Sheriff’s Office says the incident remains under investigation and additional charges are possible.
