Dozens of supporters of St. Catharine College showed up in federal court Wednesday, as a judge was scheduled to hear preliminary arguments in a high-profile student aid lawsuit.
St. Catharine College has accused the U.S. Department of Education of withholding funds without reason. After about 30 minutes of heated arguments, the judge took the debate behind closed doors.
The Department of Education wrote a letter admitting fault in the case, adding that a technological glitch with its computers were to blame for the issue. It has agreed to pay more than $42,000, but the college said that’s not enough.
Representatives from the Department of Justice attended the hearing, which they said is protocol for a case against a federal agency.
St. Catharine College President Dr. Cindy Gnadinger said her side is “trying to come to a mutually agreeable solution.”
No ruling was made Wednesday. A Department of Justice official said the sides will address the matter again on April 4.
