The Brandenburg City Council worked through several agenda items during their regular monthly meeting Monday (8/8) night. Among the items was discussion and the first reading of a proposed ordinance amendment to policies on the sale of alcohol within the city.
Mayor Ronnie Joyner said that the state alcohol regulations changed on July 17 which now does away with the strict classification scale which dictated how a certain sized city could sale alcohol. After a brief discussion the council approved the first reading of a ordinance amendment which will allow the sale of alcohol on Sundays and extend the hours of alcohol sales within the city limits. The proposed hours would be Monday through Thursday from 6 am until Midnight; Friday and Saturdays from 6 am until 2 am and Sundays from 1 pm until Midnight. Several bar owners were in attendance and applauded the council’s efforts.
In other business, the council set the tax rates on real and personal property and motor vehicle taxes by taking the compensating rate. The 2016 tax rate for real property tax will be set at .199 cents per $100 while personal property tax rates will be set at .3962 cents per $100 of accessed value. The 2017 motor vehicle and watercraft tax rate for city residents will be set at 32.80 cents per $100 of accessed value.
Mayor Joyner and the council approved an emergency to begin repairs on the Donna Drive sewer lift station that has a estimated cost of $110,000 to rework the capacity of the station. He also reported that the new High Street sidewalk project is progressing and confirmed to the council that the work is not encroaching upon any graves or grave lots at the Cap Anderson Cemetery. Some concerns had been raised once the project began to track across the cemetery property. Mayor Joyner told the council he was working to pursue a eighty percent matching grant for sidewalks through the Lincoln Trail development District which could be used downtown to rebuild the side walks along Main Street downtown.
Public Works Director T.J. Hughes reported that the sidewalk had been removed in front of the Moose Lodge and should be reformed in the next couple of days as the repair project continues downtown. Police Chief Scotty Singleton reported that only three people were arrested during the Meade County Fair which was down from previous years. He said that number was a combined figure between Brandenburg Police and the Meade County Sheriff’s Department.
At the beginning of the meeting, the council approved Mayor Joyner’s reading of a proclamation declaring Saturday, September 10 as Tucker Day in the City of Brandenburg. Mayor Joyner presented Phillip Wimpee and his family a certificate of the proclamation. The day will celebrate the life of the late Tucker Wimpee through a day filled with free food and children’s activities in the Brandenburg Riverfront Park. Joe Greer received this month’s Yard of the Month award.
The Brandenburg City Council will have a special called meeting Wednesday afternoon at 5 pm to conduct the second reading of the ordinances pertaining to the Sunday alcohol sales and city tax rates.
