Nelson County sheriff’s deputies and Bardstown police were searching for an escaped prisoner Wednesday afternoon.
Sheriff Ed Mattingly said Anthony White freed himself from wrist and ankle restraints, asked the driver of the police car to roll down the window so he could get some air, then reached out and unlocked the door and ran.
Officers were scouring the Maple Hill neighborhood for the suspect, who is described as a 5-foot-9 white male weighing about 178 pounds with a medium build, brown eyes and brown hair. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt.
His last known address was 210 Laverne Court, Mount Washington.
Deputies had gone to Muhlenberg County to get him, where he was charged with heroin possession.
In March, White was indicted in Nelson County on theft charges for taking a Mustang from Conway-Heaton dealership and was also indicted as a first-degree persistent felony offender. According to that indictment, his prior convictions include auto theft, receiving stolen property, criminal possession of a forged instrument, first-degree wanton endangerment, theft of a motor vehicle decal, first-degree burglary in Jefferson County and second-degree escape in Fayette County.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Nelson Circuit Court on the car theft charges.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to call 502-348-3211 or notify their local police.
