A rash of vehicle break-ins in Elizabethtown, called “smash and grab” by Elizabethtown Police Department, led to 12 reports Tuesday at Freeman Lake Park and University Drive Park.
Elizabethtown Police Department spokesman Virgil Willoughby said suspects smashed windows and took whatever they could grab quickly.
Thieves got away with a variety of items, including cash and credit cards
Willoughby said when caught the suspects will be charged with theft by unlawful taking and criminal mischief, both potential felonies.
Willoughby said some of the vehicles broken into were unlocked.
Elizabethtown Police responded to its first call of a car break-in around 4:09 p.m. at 1901 Ring Road at the Freeman Lake pull-off.
Over the course of the evening, there were 12 reports on thefts from automobiles with six from Freeman Lake Park area and six from University Drive. Willoughby said in each of these crimes, property was removed either by shattering the window or the door being left unsecured. It appears that in most of these instances a purse was observed setting in the floor-board or in the seat.
The suspects used credit or debit cards within hours of the break-ins at Target and Walgreens, police reported.
Elizabethtown Police Department released store video of a suspect leaving Target in hopes of getting help from the public to identify the suspects. Based on video footage from stores where credit cards were used, police have two suspects, a man and a woman.
Police urged residents to secure items in the trunk of vehicle.
Anyone who recognizes the smash-and-grab suspects is asked to contact the Elizabethtown Police Department at (270) 765-4125.
