The Grayson County man who was previously shot in November while chasing burglars off his property, and who later found a bomb in his barn, has been killed in a shooting.
The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call regarding a possible deceased person in a car on Bluff Street in Rosine. When deputies arrived, they found Johnnie Hayes of Caneyville, deceased behind the wheel. It is believed Hayes suffered a gunshot wound.
A suspect, Adam Lacefield, was arrested on unrelated charges.
Hayes was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Madisonville for an autopsy.
Hayes and his girlfriend, Wanda Ferguson had previously been hospitalized after an unidentified group attempted to steal items from their barn. When the couple tried to follow the perpetrators for nearly two miles down the road and confront them, shots were fired, ending with multiple wounds to both of them, including Hayes losing his right eye. Then, in December, Grayson County Central Dispatch received a call about an explosive device in his barn.
Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins said deputies responded to the scene at the time and confirmed that it was an explosive device. Kentucky State Police’s Bomb Squad was then contacted to respond and confirmed it was “capable of doing serious damage to the home.”
The case remains under investigation.
