Fire crews remained on the scene of a five alarm fire at Green Point Ag in Hardinsburg Monday (10/14) evening.
Crews were called to the scene around 11 am CDT and found a storage building fully involved with flames and a large plume of smoke showing through the roof. Hardinsburg Fire Chief Raleigh Shelton said the building had an estimated 300 tons of different types of fertilizer stored inside.
Officials implemented a “Shelter In Place” order for citizens for an estimated 14 mile area along US 60 from Hardinsburg to Garfield. EPA officials monitored air quality levels and was able to lift the restrictions around 4:15 pm CDT Monday afternoon.
Shelton said the cause of the fire remains under investigation and fire crews had to allow the fire to burn itself out due to the materials involved would become volatile with water. Late in the afternoon only a small amount of smoke showed after the building collapsed into itself and was able to be extinguished with an earthen berm to contain and smoother out remaining hot spots.
Green Point Ag provides grain storage and fertilizer applications for agricultural uses. No injuries were reported during the fire operations.
