Members of Meade County Fiscal Court met during a special called meeting Thursday (3/23) morning.
The court approved accepting the resignation of the Judge Executive’s Administrative Assistant. During the meeting, Judge Executive Troy Kok said that there was no indication that this was about to happen as the court just approved the search for a Grant Writer position during their last regular meeting just over a week ago.
County Treasurer Tammy Graham asked the magistrates to revert the position back to two individual positions. She urged the court to move forward for a finance officer and then search for an administrative assistant. Some magistrates felt that it was too short of notice to fully make an informed vote to proceed to the hiring process. Judge Kok said that it would take about three weeks before any hiring could begin due to the county’s hiring policy.
During the discussion, Graham explained to the magistrates the increased volume of work that the Judge Executive’s office has taken on as the county has grown. She said the office is a central hub of information for all departments. She said the office handles many topics from open record requests to maintenance issues of the building along with general walk-in questions, inquires, and phone calls from citizens. She said in her 12 years as treasurer, the county budget has increased from six to thirty seven million dollars to manage. She said the workers in the office will assume the extra workloads to get the job done. Judge Executive Kok voiced concern about extra fatigue and burn out on the staff which could create more turn over.
Judge Executive Kok and County Attorney Sidney Durham expressed the need to adjust the procedure related to advertising for a full time positions. They asked the court allow the Judge Executive to advertise job positions to have allow a quicker collection of interest and be ready present to fiscal court for their approval to proceed with the hiring process. They believe that the adjustment would relieve the tension in similar situations.
The court approved the request. They also approved to advertise the for the positions of administrative assistant and financial officer. No hiring action is expected until after their next regular April meeting.
