Personal information for more than 37,000 current and former Jefferson County Public Schools workers may have been compromised in a major data breach.
The exposed records include Social Security numbers, email and home addresses, according to a Jeffersn County Public Schools letter.
The breach hit Frontline Education, a third-party software platform Jefferson County Public Schools relies on to track job applicants, manage absences, and schedule substitute teachers.
District leaders stressed that Jefferson County Public Schools’ internal computer network was never compromised.
According to district officials, Frontline first uncovered the security flaw in mid-August and notified Jefferson County Public Schools nearly two months later, on October 13.
Frontline said it fixed the security flaw with help from an outside cybersecurity firm, alerted federal authorities, and has found no signs of identity theft or data misuse so far.
Jefferson County Public Schools has alerted state authorities, including the Kentucky State Police and Attorney General’s Office, as its own investigation continues.
Frontline began mailing and emailing notices to affected workers late last month, offering two years of free credit monitoring through TransUnion.
Anyone with questions about the breach or enrollment can call Frontline at 1-800-759-7279.
