Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has asked for the resignation of Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines following a shooting that killed a judge in an eastern Kentucky courthouse last week.
Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines was arraigned by way of a virtual hearing on Wednesday in connection with the shooting death of District Judge Kevin Mullins.
Governor Beshear’s letter to Stines read, “We ask that you tender your resignation as the Letcher County Sheriff to the Letcher County Judge/Executive by the end of Friday, September 27, 2024. If you do not tender your resignation, the Governor will move forward with removal.”
It wasn’t clear what led to the shooting. The preliminary investigation indicates Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines shot District Judge Kevin Mullins multiple times following an argument inside the courthouse, according to Kentucky State Police.
The Letcher County courthouse in Whitesburg will remain closed through the end of the month. Cases and courthouse activity have been put on pause.
