Several vehicles were recently discovered at Lock and Dam No. 5 in the Green River, after a recent demolition project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers caused a decrease in the river’s water levels.
According to Warren County Emergency Management, six vehicles were pulled from the Warren County side of the Green River on September 21.
Warren County Emergency Management, along with Richardsville Fire Department and Walker’s Wrecker, spent over six hours removing the vehicles after receiving approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
According to the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, a Nationwide Permit verification letter was issued to Warren County Emergency Management for the removal of nine cars in total through winching or minor excavation of cars embedded into the river bottom.
U. S. Army Corps of Engineers stated they will continue to work with other local officials to provide expedited permit decisions for any other removal-related activities within their jurisdiction. However, they need to know specific vehicle locations and how the work would be completed before providing a permit decision.
According to Warren County Emergency Management, there was nothing suspicious discovered in any of the recovered cars, and any information they were able to recover showed that none were stolen.
Several vehicles remain at Lock and Dam No. 5 after storms in the area made the job too difficult to complete. Warren County Emergency Management said they plan to continue the removal project once water levels drop again.
