The FBI Louisville office says they are aware of “offensive and racist text messages sent to individuals around the country, including in Kentucky.” They say they are in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities.
The texts being shared across the country reference being selected to pick cotton.
UK Police say they were notified of the messages on college campuses, specifically in the SEC.
President of the Lexington-Fayette NAACP, Whit Whitaker, says he is aware of several people in Lexington who have received similar texts.
Whitaker says he has seen people of different ages receive these messages. In one case, a grandmother and her grandson were sent similar texts.
Whitaker said these texts are nothing new. This is something African Americans have had to deal with for centuries.
So, how should people respond? Whitaker says anyone who receives a text should report it, and local leaders need to publicly denounce these behaviors and create a plan to combat them. He is also asking the Black community to remain vigilant by being careful where you go. Make sure when you are out at night, or you go into certain areas that you are not alone.
