A Louisville Metro Police detective is being treated at UofL Hospital for burns and smoke inhalation after evacuating residents from a burning apartment building on Saturday.
According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, on Saturday, August 23, at around 1:07 p.m., officers responded to a fire at the 550 Apartments.
A Louisville Metro Police detective saw the heavy smoke and panicking apartment residents before first responders had arrived, and entered the building to evacuate residents before firefighters arrived.
After arriving at the scene, the Louisville Fire Department was successfully able to get the fire under control.
According to the Louisville Fire Department, the fire started in a trash bin outside of the building from a pile of belongings that were left behind by recently evicted tenants.
The flames spread into an apartment on the first floor through a window, but did not spread to any other part of the building.
No residents were found inside the building, but one adult and two children were displaced due to the fire.
Investigations led officers to believe the fire was started by two juveniles living in the apartment complex who used a lighter that they found in the discarded belongings.
