GE Appliances reports that between May and July, 148 workers at GE Appliance Park in Louisville received notice from the government that their immigration status had changed and they would no longer be eligible to work in the U.S.
Dino Driskell, president of IUE-CWA Local 83761, said some of the work visa holders are part of their union. He and other union presidents are taking steps to help them during this time of need.
Driskell said the union is working with state and national AFL-CIO chapters to connect affected members with immigration attorneys. So far, that effort has helped reclassify some workers’ status, and Driskell said he believes 11 employees have returned to work.
The company emphasized that overtime work AP1 is due to increased consumer demand for laundry products, not because of the recent layoffs.
GE Appliances also said it continues to hire additional workers, and maintain a workforce of 8-10% of additional employees, such as trained replacement operators, who cover vacation, sick, and personal days, or other unplanned absences to ensure steady production.
