Major cargo operators immediately grounded their fleets of MD-11 aircraft Saturday following a safety recommendation from Boeing, affecting approximately 70 planes worldwide.
UPS and FedEx suspended MD-11 operations after Boeing’s Safety Review Board determined that additional engineering analysis was necessary. The move comes days after a UPS cargo plane crashed in Louisville and killed at least 14 people.
The grounding hits a significant portion of carrier fleets. UPS said MD-11s comprise approximately 9% of its airline fleet, while FedEx currently operates 28 MD-11s out of its roughly 700 aircraft.
Both shipping giants emphasized their commitment to safety in announcing the decision.
Both companies assured customers they have contingency plans in place to maintain service levels.
Boeing is coordinating with the FAA on the matter and supporting an NTSB accident investigation.
