The first snow days of the season may have come and gone, but winter is far from over.
This time of year, keeping kids warm can be a priority, but according to safety experts, that task isn’t as simple as it seems.
Norton Children’s Prevention and Wellness said for the outdoors, wearing plenty of layers is key.
But inside a car, those layers can hurt more than they help. Thick winter coats can impact how car seat harnesses fit, impacting their effectiveness in the event of a crash.
Kinzie Evrard with Norton Children’s Prevention and Wellness said when in a car seat the harness of seatbelt needs to be as close to the child’s body as possible. So having thick layers and jackets in between that can allow for compression during a crash force and that can make the harness be a lot looser than what parents anticipate.
Norton Children’s experts suggest placing kids in a car seat with their regular outfit. They said after buckling in, you can place a coat or a blanket over them for extra warmth.
