A Barren County grand jury has indicted the man accused of driving under the influence and causing a crash in October that killed three people.
Asa R. Howard, 18, is charged with three counts of murder, three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, and one count of first-degree assault, according to an indictment returned Wednesday.
Investigators say Howard was driving a Nissan Altima on October 17 when he ran a stoplight and crashed into a truck at the intersection of Veterans Outer Loop and North Jackson Highway in Glasgow.
The crash claimed the lives of 18 year-old Emily Corbin, 17 year-old William T. Moore and 14 year-old Charley L. Fancher. Several others were injured.
Police reported finding alcohol at the scene. While toxicology results were still pending, investigators previously said alcohol likely contributed to the crash.
Speed was also cited as a likely factor, with officers stating the Altima was traveling at a high rate of speed. Exact speed has not been determined, and data from the vehicle’s event recorder was still under review.
Police also believe most of the occupants in the Altima were not wearing seatbelts. The vehicle was carrying six people that was built for four occupants.
Howard’s bail was set at $750,000 cash after the indictment was returned. The case will proceed in Barren Circuit Court.
An arraignment date was not immediately available in court records.
