The former Louisville Metro Police officer convicted of violating Breonna Taylor’s civil rights has been granted bail pending his appeal.
Brett Hankison was sentenced in July for his role in the botched raid that ended Taylor’s life in 2020.
In October, Hankison reported to a federal prison in New Jersey to begin his 33 month sentence.
In November, the United States Department of Justice asked for Hankson to be released pending appeal of his case.
On Friday, December 19, a United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit judge granted the motion.
In the filing, the judge cites “substantial questions” in the case and Hankison’s lack of danger to the community or potential of being a flight risk as reasons for granting the motion.
Additionally, the judge agreed that threats Hankison received in prison, requiring him to be moved to special housing, further supported the decision to grant him bail pending appeal.
