A dozen people have been displaced after an apartment fire on the border of the Park Hill and California neighborhoods Saturday morning.
Louisville Fire Department said crews were dispatched to the fire in the 1600 block of West Oak Street at 1:14 a.m. and made it to the multi-family residence at 1:17 a.m. Arriving firefighters found fire inside the first-floor apartment and began an aggressive interior attack.
According to officials, it took 26 firefighters a total of 10 minutes to bring the fire under control.
The fire was confined to the original apartment, but the heat caused siding damage. Additionally, utilities were shut down to the building after LG&E was unable to isolate electric and gas service. This resulted in the 12 adults being displaced. The American Red Cross is providing assistance.
Officials said the fire was caused accidentally by careless smoking.
