The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is encouraging residents and visitors to take part in Kentucky’s Free Fishing Weekend on June 6-7.
The department said during the annual event, people can fish in public waters across the state without buying a fishing license or permit. All other fishing regulations still apply, including size limits and daily catch limits. Anglers also must have permission to fish in private waters.
Communities around Kentucky typically mark the weekend with special events, including youth-focused activities, according to the department. A list of scheduled events is available on the department’s Free Fishing Weekend webpage at fw.ky.gov.
The agency also is highlighting resources for beginners and experienced anglers, including information on basic gear and techniques, places to fish, and a summary of regulations in the Kentucky Fishing & Boating Guide, which is also available in Spanish. Additional tools include maps of loaner fishing pole locations, stocked neighborhood lakes, access sites, fishing forecasts, and habitat maps.
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife also offers Hook and Cook classes in several communities throughout the year.
For anglers looking for information on the go, the department recommends the Fish Boat KY app, which provides directions to lakes, fishing reports, regulations, stocking schedules and boat ramp locations.
