Three jockeys were hospitalized and a horse was euthanized after a six-horse accident during a race Saturday night at Churchill Downs.
According to Darren Rogers, a spokesperson for Churchill Downs, the incident occurred during the second race on the far turn when Lutkenhaus, ridden by Cristian Torres, collapsed in front of other horses and jockeys.
Rogers said they were unable to avoid the fallen horse.
The other horses and their jockeys involved were Industrious, ridden by Keith Asmussen; Midnight Rumble, ridden by Axel Concepcion; Ritornello, ridden by Francisco Arrieta; Shacklebolt, ridden by Walter Rodriguez; and Steve Wood, ridden by Martin Garcia.
Rogers said Garcia, Rodriguez and Torres were conscious and were taken to UofL Hospital.
Asmussen, Concepcion and Arrieta were cleared by on-site medical staff.
Rogers said Lutkenhaus sustained a “catastrophic injury” to his left front leg and was euthanized.
No other horses required euthanasia.
