Three people have been charged after fleeing the scene of a crash, which caused damage to property on the University of Louisville’s campus.
Brent Shelton, 23, is charged with receiving stolen property between $1,000 and $10,000, first-degree criminal mischief, and leaving the scene of an accident.
According to an arrest citation, UofL Police responded to a crash at the intersection of South Floyd Street and University Boulevard around 3 p.m. on October 7.
When officers arrived on scene, witnesses said three people fled the scene and entered a parking garage after the crash.
A woman in one of the vehicles involved in the crash was transported to UofL Hospital with minor injuries.
UofL Police Department later found the three people who matched the suspects’ descriptions getting into a white Lincoln SUV at the intersection of South 4th Street and Winkler Avenue.
Police conducted a traffic stop, informing the driver that the individuals in his car were suspected of being involved in the nearby crash.
Shelton agreed to speak with officers after being read his Miranda Rights, according to the citation.
He said he was rear-ended by the other woman’s car and hit a concrete wall at the crash site, causing more than $500 in damage to UofL property.
However, the injured woman said she had a green light and was turning through the intersection when Shelton ran a red light and crashed into her car.
Shelton told police he and the other individuals fled the scene because “he was scared.”
The citation added that the vehicle he was driving was reported stolen on October 4.
Both the other man, identified as Joshua Perkins, and woman, identified as Kaleigh Fields, who were in Shelton’s vehicle admitted to being in the car and fleeing the scene.
Court records show Perkins and Fields have been charged with receiving stolen property and fleeing the scene of an accident.
A university spokesperson said none of the suspects are affiliated with UofL.
