Two people from Louisville face several charges after their alleged involvement in an elaborate theft scheme involving hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Florence Strange, 38, and Daniel Morgan, 28, were both arrested Thursday. They face a number of charges, including engaging in organized crime, receiving stolen property of $10,000 or more and criminal possession of forged instrument second degree among other things.
Strange and Morgan engaged in a scheme, with at least 10 others, that involved stealing merchandise from retail stores (including Lowe’s, Home Depot and Walmart), according to police reports. After that they would return the stolen merchandise to stores and receive gift cards for the value of the stolen merchandise before selling the gift cards to Easy Cash, primarily the location on Preston Street, for cash value.
Both Strange and Morgan gave Mirandized recorded statements. In her statement Strange admitted to her role and also implicated others, including Morgan, who committed or acted as an accomplice to the hundreds of thefts from local retail stores.
Strange admitted that except for a handful of gift cards that she had sold, all of them were obtained by fraudulent means and by carrying out the theft scheme. LeadsOnline records show that between June 2014 and March 17, 2016, Strange sold 671 cards totaling over $121,000.
Morgan, meanwhile, admitted that his role was mainly to steal the merchandise from the stores. He stated that he made a few fraudulent returns, but most of the gift cards that Strange sold were the result of him stealing the merchandise by concealing it on his person and leaving the store without paying. Morgan also admitted that Strange’s main role was to sell the fraudulently obtained gift cards.
