The price of mailing a letter will fall for the first time in nearly a century Sunday, April 10, 2016. The cost of mailing a first class letter will decrease from 49 cents to 47 cents.
The last time that there was a decrease in the price of postage was in July 1919, when stamp prices dropped from 3 cents to 2 cents. This is only the third price decrease on record going back to the Civil War. Postcard stamps will also have a new price down a penny to 34 cents. The cost of international stamps will be reduced to $1.15, a drop of 5 cents.
In January 2014, the United States Postal Service was granted a “temporary” rate increase to offset a massive budget shortfall. That “temporary” increase is now expiring.
