
The United Way of Central Kentucky has awarded $812,415 to 24 agencies throughout its five-county region.
The money goes toward programs to help residents in Hardin, Breckinridge, Grayson, LaRue and Meade counties to overcome poverty. The programs focus on education, financial stability, health and basic needs.
Through United Way, an all-volunteer community investment team selected recipients.
Many local organizations from the SpringHaven domestic violence program to Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland, to local school districts, were given grants.
Preventative programs, which focus on school readiness, supportive mentoring relationships and financial stability, made up a record 41 percent of all grants awarded.
Programs that help meet individuals’ basic needs and improve health received 42 percent and 17 percent of available money respectively.
The Community Health Clinic and Feeding America received the top two largest grants at $80,000 and $77,000 respectively.
SpringHaven domestic violence program received $60,000 to provide safety for survivors of domestic abuse and the resources needed for them to regain independence and self-sufficiency. Silverleaf sexual trauma recovery services received $40,000 to provide counseling to children who have suffered sexual abuse.
CASA of the Heartland received $56,139 to provide abused and neglected children in the Hardin County court system with trained volunteer mentors who advocate for the child’s best interests and help them find safe, permanent and loving homes.
Elizabethtown Independent Schools received $30,000 for its after-school program at Panther Place. The program provides at-risk students with homework assistance, educational enrichment, physical and arts activities, and family events.
Hardin County Schools received $55,000 for its First Connections program to prepare children for kindergarten, conduct educational home visits and keep teen parents on track to graduate.
The adult education program in Hardin County received $15,000 to provide wraparound success coaching for adults pursuing their GEDs.
