Eight schools in Hardin County will no longer receive federal funds that provide free lunches to all students.
The school district sent a letter to families on Monday announcing the schools would lose access to the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). The program allows school districts to offer lunch at no cost to every student, regardless of household income.
The eight schools impacted are:
Cecilia Valley Elementary School
Lincoln Trail Elementary School
Rineyville Elementary School
Vine Grove Elementary School
East Hardin Middle School
Central Hardin High School
John Hardin High School
North Hardin High School
John Wright, Hardin County Schools’ community relations specialist, said schools must have a 60 percent free lunch rate for the program to be sustainable.
However, Wright said parents were not filling out and returning forms, which meant the district did not know how many students actually rely on the program for their meals.
Wright said families can still fill out an application for free/reduced-price lunch before the new school year. That form should be available over the summer. Breakfast meals will remain free for every student, but students who don’t qualify for free lunches and go to the eight schools on the list will have to pay $3.25 per day if they decide to eat at the school cafeteria.
