A man was arrested Sunday morning and charged with driving under the influence after allegedly disregarding signs and driving a truck into an overpass along 3rd Street near Winkler Avenue and Eastern Parkway.
According to Louisville Metro Police, 55-year-old Hoby Dillon was charged with reckless driving, disregarding a traffic control device and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.
Court documents state just before 1 a.m., Dillon continued driving his semitruck straight despite signs directing all semitrucks to turn left.
The overpass is already notorious in the city and is often referred to by locals as Louisville’s “can opener” because oversized trucks occasionally get wedged under the bridge.
Police said they could smell alcohol on Dillon’s breath. He allegedly told police he had not had anything to drink. Officers conducted standard field sobriety tests after smelling alcohol on his breath.
According to police, Dillon showed 16 out of 18 indicators of impairment during the tests. Police said Dillon had to be told more than once during the eye test to keep his head straight.
The arrest citation states Dillon told officers, after being read his Miranda rights, that he had “a couple beers six hours prior to driving.”
According to police, there have been 33 calls for service to the area of the overpass since Interstate 65 shut down.
The underpass has an 11-foot, 8-inch clearance and has claimed an unknown number of trucks over the years, despite signs indicating the low clearance.
Dillon is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, July 1.
