The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says an Ohio County property contaminated with arsenic is about to get cleaned up.
Arsenic trioxide levels at the site near the Daviess County line exceed 150,000 milligrams per kilogram. The EPA considers more than 50 milligrams per kilogram to be a high concentration for the area.
EPA investigators believe the arsenic was stored in containers inside a barn that burned down, releasing the arsenic into the ground. According to the EPA, exposure to arsenic can cause cancer, and high levels can result in death.
The first phase of the cleanup consists of site preparation, including rebuilding the access road. Then additional samples will be collected in order to determine the full scope of the cleanup.
