The parent of a former student at Fern Creek Elementary School was arrested Friday after police say she threatened to kill students and caused a brief period of heightened security at Fern Creek High School.
According to arrest documents, officers responded to the school around noon Friday, February 23, for a report of an “out of control parent.”
When they got there, the principal of the school told officers the parent, 29 year-old Utamuliza Karinganire was upset upon learning that her child no longer went to the school. The arrest document said Karinganire no longer had custody of the child.
When the school’s employees sent her away, Karinganire allegedly then went to Fern Creek High School, where she approached a class that was outside working on a project. Arrest documents say she began to yell, “I am going to kill all of you. You will all Die,” to the students in the group.
She then allegedly made the sign of a gun with her hand and began acting like she was going to shoot students. Karinganire then allegedly pulled out a lighter and tried to burn several students, causing them to run away.
Shortly after, the school went on a level three lock down, which Jefferson County Public Schools refers to as “heightened security.”
Karinganire was spotted by officers outside of the school and arrested. The lighter she allegedly used was found in the front pocket of her hoodie, although a Jefferson County Public Schools Spokesperson said that the school’s principal was unaware of the threats to burn students.
Karinganire is currently at Louisville Metro Corrections and is charged with one count of terroristic threatening and one count of criminal trespassing.
