The University of Kentucky is doing damage control after university officials realized their campus libraries were accidentally handing out eclipse glasses that were not deemed safe.
In a statement Friday, UK Libraries said they were informed Friday morning their eclipse glasses, made by the company Biniki, were not approved for safe use. The university’s libraries had been handing the glasses out to students and others all week.
The statement from UK Libraries said the product erroneously claimed it had been approved by the American Astronomical Society (AAS).
The university is now asking that all students and others that picked up the glasses throughout the week get rid of them immediately.
Looking at an eclipse without proper protection can cause a condition called solar retinopathy, which can cause permanent damage to the eyes.
To make sure your eclipse glasses are safe for use, check that they are labeled “ISO 12312-2” before using. Experts say to be 100% sure they are safe to use, you can also put a flashlight directly to the glasses’ lenses and, if light does not pass through, they are good to go.
