The 2024 legislative session in Kentucky saw a handful of controversial bills and budget line items, but it also created some universally applauded results.
Just in Louisville and nearby counties, the general assembly passed funding for downtown at the Belvedere, an expo center expansion, an outdoor education area at Shawnee Park and the new UofL Health South Hospital in Bullitt County.
However, not everything had such bipartisan support.
The bill backed by democrats that would remove guns from someone’s possession during crisis (Senate Bill 13) never got a vote; neither did a bill allowing for rape or incest exceptions in the state abortion ban (House Bill 711).
Republicans passed the Safer Kentucky Act (House Bill 5) aimed at harshening criminal penalties and also pushed through HCR 81, a resolution that creates a task force to look at potentially breaking up Jefferson County Public Schools.
Louisville Democrats strongly oppose it.
Lawmakers are also prepping for a statewide vote for school choice. It could be a high-spending battle between parties.
Kentuckians will vote on the constitutional amendment for school choice in the fall.
