A Louisville pastor who paid a $70,000 bond for a man who fled in the middle of his attempted murder trial now must forfeit that money over to the court.
Court documents show David Fortney paid the $70,000 bond for Vernon Jackson. Jackson was on trial for an attempted murder in March.
The judge declared a mistrial because the jury couldn’t reach a verdict, but Jackson wasn’t there hear the ruling because as the jury was deliberating, he cut off his home incarceration ankle bracelet and ran off.
The commonwealth’s attorney said this was a violation of his bond and Fortney should lose the money. Fortney’s lawyer argued that appearing before the court after Jackson’s trial had concluded was not a condition of bail.
The judge sided with the state. Jackson is still on the run.
