It took tear gas, but police from two local agencies were able to make an arrest at a Radcliff motel after negotiations broke down.
Radcliff police officers responded with multiple units around 1 a.m. Monday at Econo Lodge at 261 N. Dixie Boulevard after police said a woman escaped a man holding her at gunpoint in one of the rooms.
William Woods III, 38, of Fenton, Missouri, is facing a kidnapping – adult and other felony charges after police say he had the woman restrained in the hotel room and was threatening her with a loaded handgun. His arrest citation also said Woods instructed the woman to remove her clothing while telling her “it’s over for you.”
The woman escaped safely and notified authorities, according to police.
When police were unable to get the man from the room, the department requested assistance around 4:30 a.m. from Elizabethtown Police Department’s Special Response Unit and Crisis Negotiations Team to execute an arrest warrant on Woods.
According to Elizabethtown Police Department Public Information Officer Chris Denham, Woods had a warrant for his arrest from Radcliff Police on charges of first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and menacing.
After negotiating some time with Woods, police were unable to get him out of the room. Denham said it took deploying tear gas for Woods to peacefully come out where officers were waiting to arrest him.
He was taken into custody without incident and the scene was wrapped up by officers by 8 a.m.
Wilson Road, the road behind the motel, was blocked by Radcliff police and fire vehicles to through traffic as the incident was in a room on the backside of the motel.
Radcliff police and firefighters remained on the scene to clean and ventilate the room.
Woods was lodged in Hardin County Detention Center under a $10,000 cash bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 11.
