One of the three men charged in connection to the murder and disappearance of a Bardstown mother in 2015 appeared in court Thursday after his attorney filed a motion to have charges dropped.
Steven Lawson has been charged with tampering with evidence and conspiracy to commit murder in connection to the Crystal Rogers murder case. His attorney Ted Lavit filed a motion back in March to get those charges dropped. Lavit says they felt blindsided by the charges because his client had agreed to testify in exchange for immunity. The motion filed lists numerous recorded interactions during recorded police interviews where Lawson was offered immunity.
The commonwealth said Lawson had to be 100% truthful to receive immunity. However, they said that hasn’t been the case.
In court Thursday, Lavit argued for his motion for immunity. Special Prosecutor Shane Young says the commonwealth isn’t going to do that until Lawson separates the truth from his lies.
Young used four different examples, one of them being a phone call made to Rogers’ former boyfriend Brooks Houck, allegedly telling him “the job had been done.”
Young says Lawson previously admitted to making that call under oath.
Lavit says his client is responsible for getting the prosecution information to bring charges on Houck, who is charged with Rogers’ murder. If Lawson is not given immunity, Lavit says nothing his client says should be used in a future trial.
Judge Charles Simms says he will make a decision on the motion to drop charges for Lawson soon.
