Daviess County Sheriff’s Office officials say two people were arrested after stealing and vandalizing a home in Owensboro.
According to a press release, a house sitter had been staying at a home in the 2600 block of Sunrise Drive while the homeowners were traveling over the 4th of July weekend.
Officials say when the homeowners returned on July 7, they discovered their home had been vandalized with extensive damage throughout the residence.
They say several items were missing from the home, including a truck, two handguns, prescription medication and smart watches.
Detectives say they questioned the house sitter and learned that Brayden Markwell and his juvenile girlfriend had visited the home on July 4. Following that visit, the house sitter noticed the truck was missing and there was damage to the residence.
The house sitter told deputies that he had met with Markwell to ask him about the damage and Markwell arrived at the meeting driving the stolen truck.
Further investigation by detectives revealed that the truck had been involved in a hit and run accident in Owensboro as well as a serious crash in Breckenridge County, in which the truck was extensively damaged during the days following the theft.
Markwell had been driving the vehicle in both of those incidents.
Three of the stolen smart watches were located inside the truck by law enforcement investigating the crash in Breckenridge County.
The investigation revealed that Markwell’s 17-year-old girlfriend had actively participated in these crimes.
Markwell was eventually arrested and lodged in the Daviess County Detention Center.
The juvenile female was charged and released to the custody of a guardian.
This is an ongoing investigation.
Detectives continue to conduct interviews and search for stolen property.
